Emperor Castle Volume 1 eBook Sungmo Kim
The story begins when Korean, Chunhoo Kang, Japan's number one hitman of the Yakuza, leaves the organization to return home to his family in Korea. However, the Yakuza have other plans and send assassins to kill him. Meanwhile, unbeknownst to him, his son, part of the Korean mafia has been framed, and the mother died under mysterious circumstances. Okay, the story isn't inspiring, but the action and artwork is worthwhile to look at. The violent action is reminiscent of Fist of the North Star and Berserk other manga titles that have blood flying everywhere. This is strictly a no nonsense action title which involves martial arts and no comedy. It is pretty well drawn and detailed in terms of line weight, shading, and proportion. While reading, there is some confusion with the main character, Chunhoo Kang, and his son looking almost the same if not for the scar on his eye. It's true that some of the backgrounds are B/W photographs, but its better than having absent backgrounds like in some other titles. Anyway, it's not that distracting to the story where you might lose your place. The title also has nudity and sexual situations to mildly put it. Defintely not for the younger audiences. However, it is done in a way that it's not gratuitous fan-service. Sungmo Kim's artwork initially drew me into the book, but the story of a man switching from hitman to family man grows on you. Emperor Castle Volume 1 eBook Sungmo Kim Reviews
For me, this one had a similar feeling to that of manhwa you see in Korean newspapers. It has a generic storyline with gangsters, sex and the the theme of honor. I think an interesting thing to note was the whole Korean/Japan rivalry going on. Despite the typical story and background, this manhwa is still pretty fun to read. All in all, it has a very old school feeling to it that's always enjoyable.
I enjoyed "Emperor's Castle" immensely. This first volume wastes no time throwing readers into a dynamic and quick-paced story. Readers who prefer their heroes to kick ass with overwhelming punctuation will find much to like in the first volume of "Emperor's Castle" which often reads like a print version of a good John Woo action movie. While the story is action-packed, the writer Sungmo Kim does an admirable job taking us from place to place and reminding readers that there's a larger story to tell, an expansive underworld of intrigue to explore and goals that each character ruthlessly pursues.
I would love it if this title were to be made into a noir film. The dark storylines, the dashing men, the beautiful and fallen women, and the crime elements all make for such an exciting read, it would be a great film too! Many mangas or manhwas can be very girly (not that it's bad, but it's nice to have some variety), flowery, or sugary sweet--but this one is gritty and packs a punch. Right in the solar plexus! Any guys out there who think that manga and manhwa are the way that I described in parentheses need to look no furhter than this series to be proven wrong. A sexy, scary, fun roller coaster ride, this one's a page turner for sure.
