He suspects that Lucy Landon knows more than she is saying, but, when he starts to investigate, he finds the only thing he really wants to discover is how Lucy's lips taste. Lady Libertine A Regency Novella Risque Regency Book 1 edition by Kate Harper Literature Fiction eBooks

This novellete is a bit risque so if you don't want to read spicey material you may want to pass this one by though it is very entertaining. It is not what I would call raunchy. A bit of risque is necessary for the plot. There is a spy among the ton. The spy has a column, "On Dits" in the London Times one day a week where the indiscretions of the ton are made public. The column tripled the readership of the Times. Lord's and Ladies would like to strangle the infamous Lady Libertine but the Times editor will not disclose who Lady Libertine is nor whether it is a woman or a man. Thomas, the editor, indicates they don't have to remove it as no names are listed fir the miscreants, merely enough information so everyone knows from the descriptions.

Everyone is reading the Times and most want the articles to be stopped though they wish to miss nothing. There is a woman, 23 years old who writes about her fellow members of the ton for the money it brings in. Her father left her a cottage but not the funds to maintain it. She hasn't found any one she wants to marry. Her mother is mean to her and jealous that her father left the cottage for her and nothing for the two girls the mother sites on and who are more lovely. Phones, who dearly loves her sister, calls her mouse which was their father's pet name for her. She is quiet and observes and is not seen. She is thus able to hide in plain sight. She does not report on small gatherings but large ones where many are present. She is seen by Lord Hammerley entering the Times office twice when she went to collect her earnings. He suspicions that Lucy knows who Lady Libertine is. She may be a messenger for her. Yet she knows Thomas because he was Secretary to her father before he died.

As the Lord pursues Lucy for information he begins to really see her. She is smart, says what she thinks, outs up with a great deal from her mother (who is pushing her youngest daughter, Phoebe, toward the Earl). He also notices that Lucy has beautiful lips and he was quite upset when another possible suitor shows up paying attention to Lucy. That is when the Earl finds out about Lucy writing the column. He is determined to confront Lucy. I would highly recommend this story.

Lady Libertine A Regency Novella Risque Regency Book 1 edition by Kate Harper Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

Ms. Harper writes delightful stories with lively characters. Mostly, they are well done and believable. I do wish she would understand the difference between 'amount' and 'number' and that the same pronoun is used with a conjunction as is used without it, as in "Phoebe and me" rather than "Phoebe and I". Also, a quick reference to Google Maps would give her believable street names in Mayfair, while one to either Wikipedia or the eminently proper Debrett's would tell her that the daughter of an earl remains 'Lady Julia' after her marriage to an entitled gentleman, never plain 'Mrs. Challander'.

She writes the more risque scenes well. And, while they are enjoyable, she seems to assume that young ladies of the Regency period know more about their own and their male counterparts' analogies than they did.

However, my biggest criticism is that these stories are just too short and simple! They end far too soon!
Lucy Landon, a member of society, writes a column for a newspaper, under the pen name of Lady Libertine. Not just any column, a gossip column and her targets are members of the upper class, the 'ton'. No one knows how this Lady Libertine is able to discover her salacious tidbits, but her column is one of the most popular in any of the papers. Her writings come to the attention of a certain Lord Hamersley, when she includes him in her articles and he becomes determined to find out who this writer is. Lucy is a bright, intelligent and irreverent young woman who is trying to save up enough money from her column, to escape her mother's hateful treatment. Hamersley is a deliciously handsome rake. A great adventure, full of everything you expect from Kate Harper - fun, love, passion and wonderful descriptions of the machinations of high society.
Lucy Landon is a 24 year old spinter with a truly hateful mother. Wanting to get away from the life she currently has she jumps at the opportunity to write a gossip column on a known paper. "Rand" the Earl of Hamersley happens to be her lattest "On Dit". Reading about his careless randezvous with a Dukes Intended has him fuming and seeking to discover who the misterious Lady Libertine really is. He gets to meet the "mousie" Lucy and while trying to get information about Lady Libertine he ends up noticing that the mousie girl is not that mousie after all..... This is a short story, I don't know you, but word count dosnt really give me insight into a books length. This one is 7 chapters +epilogue. I enjoyed the book, the characters are very likable (with exception to the mother) and you get to feel the attraction and the romance of it. I really wished it were longer so that there was more interaction between the two main characters but it is a novella so I can only say that although short it left me with a smile. I recommend it for an afternoon read......
When I read this book's synopsis I got curious, I thought it would be a fun story a la Mrs. Whistledown (back when Julia Quinn was writing good books). It had some fun, sweet moments but I just did not get the romance between the main characters. Both the H and h are likeable characters in their own right (the h better developed), but it is their interaction with each other that felt forced and awkward. I just did not see why they each suddenly had this uncontrollable desire to kiss and be kissed by the other. They just did not interact enough prior to forming this passion, so their attraction felt one-dimensional, flimsy and not real. The forgettable secondary characters did not help. Disappointing..
